Max Verstappen gets British journalist THROWN OUT of a press conference after taking exception to his questions and ‘stupid grin’ last year
Max Verstappen ejects British journalist during heated press conference
Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula One world champion, recently expelled a British journalist from his press briefing before the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The incident occurred as Verstappen grew frustrated with the reporter’s questions and demeanor.
The journalist, Giles Richards of the Guardian, was repeatedly told to leave the Red Bull hospitality area three times. Verstappen declared, “I won’t speak until he’s gone,” as tensions escalated during the exchange.
Roots of the conflict trace back to Abu Dhabi showdown
The dispute between Verstappen and Richards originated from their clash in Abu Dhabi last December, the closing race of the 2025 season. At that time, Verstappen narrowly missed out on a fifth consecutive title, finishing second to Lando Norris by two points.
“You’re forgetting all the other events that shaped my season,” Verstappen retorted. “The only thing you bring up is Barcelona. I knew that would happen. And you’re giving me that ridiculous smile now. It’s part of racing. You adapt and grow.”
Richards had previously questioned Verstappen about the Barcelona incident, which cost him nine points. This time, Verstappen took particular offense to the journalist’s tone and phrasing. As Richards picked up his recording equipment to leave, he quipped, “Seriously?”
The confrontation lasted about 30 seconds before Richards exited, shaking his head. Verstappen then proceeded to field questions from the remaining media for the following 10 minutes, maintaining his composure despite the earlier outburst.
