Football Rally in Peru Leaves One Fan Dead, Dozens Injured

Before a highly anticipated local football match in Lima, Peru, a violent clash erupted among supporters, resulting in a fatality and multiple injuries. The Peruvian Health Minister, Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero, confirmed the death at a Lima hospital, stating that 47 individuals were treated for injuries, three of whom remain in critical condition.

The incident occurred at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, where crowds had gathered in anticipation of the derby against Universitario de Deportes, Alianza Lima’s rivals. Early reports claimed parts of the stadium’s wall and infrastructure collapsed, but this has been refuted by officials. Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo noted that the southern stands were structurally sound, asserting, “There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit.”

Despite the chaos, the football league confirmed the match will proceed as scheduled. However, the interior ministry initially reported that 40 firefighters arrived to rescue people trapped in a structure. Alianza Lima later clarified on X that the incident was not linked to structural failures, emphasizing the event’s “commitment to the safety and well-being of all attendees.” The league is currently probing the circumstances of the rally.

Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the disturbance, which reportedly began as a heated rivalry between fans. The situation highlights ongoing tensions in Peruvian football culture, where passionate support can sometimes escalate into dangerous confrontations.
