Dolce & Gabbana co-founder steps down as chair

Co-Founder Stefano Gabbana Steps Down from Dolce & Gabbana Leadership

Stefano Gabbana, one of the original architects of Dolce & Gabbana, has left his role as chairman of the iconic fashion house. The duo, who launched the brand in 1985, has been navigating a financial challenge of around €450 million, compounded by a broader decline in the luxury retail market, particularly in China. Despite this, Gabbana will retain his creative responsibilities, continuing to collaborate with Domenico Dolce on collections. His exit marks a shift in the company’s leadership, as he is replaced by Alfonso Dolce, Domenico’s sibling and the firm’s chief executive, effective January 1st.

Strategic Moves and Market Expansion

Dolce & Gabbana has been diversifying into sectors like hospitality and furniture, showcasing items such as a leopard-print porcelain vase priced at £1,084 in its latest collection. The brand’s financial adviser was appointed in March, signaling ongoing efforts to address its debt. However, as of Friday, the firm remained silent on its current status, citing ongoing negotiations with creditors.

Expert Perspectives on the Brand’s Challenges

“It’s no secret that the brand is in significant debt,” noted fashion analyst Priya Raj. “Privately owned, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Mario Assunto Dolce each hold a 40% stake, though the future of their shares is unclear.”

Raj highlighted that the brand has managed to survive recent controversies, including criticism over its model casting at a Milan Fashion Week event. A backlash occurred when the fall/winter men’s show featured an all-white model lineup, prompting social media backlash from figures like Bella Hadid. Yet, she emphasized that the brand’s signature “sexy Sicilian vibe” has endured, even in a market favoring minimalist styles. “The issue lies in financial management, not design,” Raj said. “A minority investor or strategic partnership is likely needed to stabilize the business.”

A Legacy Forged by Celebrity Collaborations

Established in Milan, Dolce & Gabbana rose to prominence through its association with global celebrities. A pivotal moment came in the 1990s when Madonna wore the brand during her “Erotica” album era, commissioning custom outfits for her 1993 The Girlie Show tour. This partnership cemented the brand’s reputation for bold, sensual aesthetics, while also expanding its reach through affordable items like sunglasses and perfumes. The company’s recent statement described Gabbana’s departure as “a natural evolution of its organisational structure and governance.”
