Mamdani Says It’s Time to Move Past Platner Campaign

Mamdani says it s time to bring this chapter to a close following the collapse of Graham Platner’s Senate campaign. The New York City mayor offered his perspective during a Thursday interview with NY1’s Errol Lewis, choosing to focus on moving forward rather than analyzing broader implications for progressive politics. When asked whether Platner’s troubles signal deeper issues within progressive circles, Mamdani emphasized the need to conclude this particular phase and look ahead.

Addressing Progressive Concerns

The conversation highlighted questions about whether progressives had been too quick to support Platner, only to find him inadequate for the position. Lewis noted that Platner’s troubles sparked a national discussion about the progressive push to move beyond traditional mainstream Democrats. Mamdani says it s time to let voters guide the way forward, expressing confidence that Maine’s electorate would provide direction.

“I think my focus right now is how do we ensure that we bring this chapter to a close and then start to write a new chapter,” Mamdani said. “And I think I trust the voters of Maine to point us in the right direction.”

This marks the second time Mamdani has publicly commented on the Maine race. Earlier in the week, before Platner officially suspended his campaign, the mayor stated he believed it was appropriate for Platner to withdraw from contention. Mamdani says it s time for the situation to resolve naturally rather than engaging in broader criticism of the movement’s approach to candidate selection.

Local Focus and Campaign Connections

When asked about potential involvement in future elections outside New York, Mamdani indicated he would remain focused locally. He noted that all his recent endorsements have been for candidates within the city. The mayor has previously backed several progressive congressional hopefuls, including Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier. Each of these candidates secured victory in their respective races last month.

Although Mamdani never formally endorsed Platner, the two campaigns maintained a professional link through Morris Katz. Katz serves as one of Mamdani’s most trusted advisors and previously played a key role in establishing Platner’s campaign organization before joining the mayor’s team. Mamdani says it s time to focus on local priorities while allowing the Maine situation to unfold.

Platner’s campaign faced numerous challenges from the beginning, including allegations about a Nazi symbol tattoo and behavioral issues with former romantic partners. Jenny Racicot’s rape allegation, published by Politico, proved particularly damaging despite Platner’s denial. Several prominent Democrats who had previously defended Platner chose to distance themselves, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Ro Khanna, and Senator Ruben Gallego. On Wednesday, Platner announced the suspension of his campaign through a video message shared on social media platforms.
