Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman
Two Metropolitan Police officers are set to appear in court following a collision involving a pregnant woman and her unborn child on the A20 in south-east London. The incident, which took place near the junction with Kidbrooke Park on 17 October 2024, resulted in the death of the 38-year-old driver at the scene before she later passed away in hospital.
PC Chris Johnson faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins is accused of dangerous driving. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) concluded its investigation in October 2023, determining that both officers were involved in the crash. Johnson was operating the vehicle directly responsible for the collision, and Tomkins’ charge relates to his driving behavior during the event.
“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident. The IOPC have conducted a thorough and complex investigation, and we have worked closely with them as their inquiries have progressed. It is important that nothing is said that could prejudice the court proceedings that will now follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.” — Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham
