The beloved fast food chain older than McDonald’s that’s still thriving after 87 years
McDonald’s UK marked its 50th anniversary last year, commemorating half a century since the first golden arches appeared in Woolwich in 1974. Yet, the fast-food brand has roots that stretch further back, with its origins tracing to 1940 when the initial McDonald’s restaurant opened in San Bernardino, California.
It wasn’t until 1955 that the brand evolved into the McDonald’s we recognize today. Now, it operates over 44,000 locations globally, including more than 13,000 in the United States. However, another chain has surpassed this milestone, having been around for over 87 years and continuing to flourish.
Greggs: A legacy of tradition and growth
Greggs, a staple in British culture, was established in 1939 by John Gregg. In its early days, the business focused on delivering baking supplies, such as fresh eggs and yeast, to households in Newcastle on a bicycle. The first physical shop, Greggs of Gosforth, opened on Gosforth High Street in 1951, selling baked goods and sweet treats.
John Gregg managed the store until his passing in 1964, after which his son Ian took over. Under his leadership, the brand expanded rapidly during the 1970s, acquiring local bakeries and eventually going public in 1984. By the turn of the millennium, Greggs had grown to over 1,000 UK locations following the acquisition of Bakers Oven.
The iconic branding, including the recognizable square logo, was introduced in 2008. Since then, the chain has continued to evolve, introducing new items like sandwiches, soups, and vegan sausage rolls. Collaborations with brands such as Primark have also added a modern twist to its offerings.
Recent expansion and luxury ventures
In 2023, Greggs opened a record 220 new stores, followed by an additional 140 to 160. Its current total exceeds 2,450 UK sites, with a target of reaching 3,000. The company also operates outlet stores in Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow, and other major cities, offering discounted day-old food from its network.
A notable initiative came in 2023 when Greggs partnered with Fenwick in Newcastle to launch ‘Posh Greggs.’ This collaboration brought fine dining elements to the department store, including a champagne bar introduced the next year. Diners could pair pastries with £425 drinks, highlighting the brand’s creative ventures.
Greggs further showcased its innovation at London Fashion Week 2024, unveiling a 22-carat gold jewelry line. The collection featured sausage roll earrings, a Jammy Heart Necklace, and a £96 charm bracelet crafted by British artist Dion Kitson. The brand’s latest project, The Golden Flake Tavern, opened in Fenwick’s department store, offering exclusive beers like the Pink Jammie Pale Ale and Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager, brewed in partnership with Full Circle Brew Co.
