Barron Trump praised by UK judge for phoning 999 to report attack on friend
A Russian man, identified as Matvei Rumiantsev, 23, was sentenced to four years in prison after assaulting a woman and recording part of the attack to show Barron Trump, the youngest son of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident occurred due to Mr. Trump’s jealousy over his daughter’s relationship with the victim, following their initial connection via social media.
The Assault and 999 Call
During the attack, he answered a FaceTime call from Barron Trump and captured footage of himself kicking the woman while she lay injured on the floor. Mr. Trump initiated a 999 call, connecting with the City of London Police and urgently informing the operator about the incident.
‘It’s really an emergency. I’m calling from the US, uh, I just got a call from a girl, you know, she’s getting beat up.’
The victim testified that during the assault, which lasted approximately an hour, she felt she was in immediate danger and could not escape. She said Mr. Trump’s call to the UK police ‘helped save my life.’
Judge’s Remarks and Trial Context
Mr. Justice Bennathan described Rumiantsev as a ‘trained fighter’ and ‘jealous’ individual prone to outbursts. He noted the defendant’s lack of insight and empathy during the trial, emphasizing his attempt to shift blame onto the victim.
‘You knew she was a vulnerable, emotional young woman when you attacked her,’ the judge said.
The transcript of the 999 call, made just days before Mr. Trump’s father’s inauguration, reveals his plea for urgent action. Despite being in the U.S., he ensured emergency services in the UK were alerted.
‘He saw you beating her up and you held the phone and filmed her, an angry act to humiliate her,’ Mr Justice Bennathan said.
Although Mr. Trump declined to testify in person, his account to police was crucial to the case. His comments included: ‘What I saw was very brief indeed but indeed prevalent. I didn’t expect her to pick up due to the difference in the time zone, the fact I am in the USA, the phone was answered but not by her, to my dismay.’
Campaign Against Violence
On November 25, 2024, Metro launched ‘This Is Not Right,’ a campaign aimed at highlighting the ongoing crisis of violence against women. Partnering with Women’s Aid, the initiative seeks to draw attention to the scale of this national emergency.
The judge highlighted Barron’s role in the incident, praising his ‘lifesaving’ efforts to raise the alarm. The call included the following exchange:
‘I’m calling from the US, uh, I just got a call from a girl—she’s getting beat up. The address is [Redacted].’
Later, when asked how he knew the victim, Barron replied:
‘I don’t think these details matter, she’s getting really badly beat up. The call was about eight minutes ago, I don’t know what could have happened by now.’
The case also revealed Mr. Trump’s email correspondence with detectives, where he expressed his willingness to appear as a prosecution witness. In one message, he wrote:
‘What I saw was very brief indeed but indeed prevalent.’
