Outrage over alleged monkey abuse in China
Footage showing monkeys allegedly subjected to abuse during a live performance at a tourist site has ignited public backlash in China.
The event occurred at Longquan Ancient Town Drama Fantasy City in Luquan District, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. Clips depicted a macaque equipped with a metal muzzle and wearing a yellow vest, forced to kneel by a man speaking to an audience filled with children.
“The monkey act was managed by an external performance team, and the venue itself had no role in daily operations,” stated staff at Longquan Ancient Town.
After the man covered the animal’s head with a black cloth and restrained its arms behind it using a plastic pipe, he grabbed a prop firearm and mimicked the act of shooting, causing the creature to collapse and remain motionless.
A second monkey was observed restrained by a lengthy rope around its neck, while two others in the background were similarly bound. The footage triggered a surge of complaints, with viewers calling the scenes disturbing and accusing the performance of animal cruelty.
Officials from the Luquan District Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism Bureau confirmed awareness of the public outcry and initiated an investigation. They noted that the performers involved were members of an external team rather than employees of the tourist site. The probe is ongoing.
2023 monkey torture ring exposed globally
In 2023, a monkey torture ring exposing online users to pay for watching videos of primates being mistreated was revealed. A worldwide network spanning the US to Indonesia was exposed by the BBC after a year-long investigation.
The World Service, in collaboration with animal rights groups, uncovered hundreds of individuals across the US, UK, and other nations paying Indonesians to torment and kill baby long-tailed macaques on camera. Initially shared on YouTube, the footage later moved to encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram as demand for more extreme content increased.
Following the investigation, law enforcement was alerted, resulting in the arrest of several individuals linked to the operation. The incident has drawn comparisons to the recent performance controversy, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal treatment in entertainment.
