New Nintendo Switch 2 console model to be released only in Europe claims report

Report Suggests Nintendo’s Switch 2 Will Be Europe-Specific to Meet EU Regulations

A recent report indicates Nintendo is reportedly compelled to introduce a new Switch 2 variant, exclusively for the European market, as a response to EU regulations aimed at enhancing consumer repair rights.

Since its launch nearly a year ago, the Switch 2 has remained a popular choice, though some users are anticipating the release of the Switch Lite before making a purchase. However, Nintendo may unveil yet another update prior to that.

reports that Nintendo is modifying the Switch 2’s design to enable users to replace the console’s battery, a move necessitated by European Union legislation introduced in July 2023. This initiative is part of the broader right to repair campaign, aiming to cut down electronic waste.

Reports suggest the legislation mandates all consumer electronics in the EU to have replaceable batteries by 2027, so the updated console may be introduced before the year’s end. While the changes are currently targeted at Europe, speculation exists that Nintendo could apply similar adjustments to models in Japan and the US if consumer demand rises.

Though the UK is not part of the EU, it is expected to receive the same consoles and games as other European countries, making it likely that this revised model will also be available there.

Curiously, a Japanese-only version of the Switch 2 already exists, priced at around £235, designed to offset the yen’s current depreciation. If Nintendo releases a new model for Europe, it would unintentionally create three distinct regional versions of the console.

The Switch 2 has been the fastest-selling console ever, though its sales have slowed in recent months. The original Switch, which also features an internal battery, may face uncertainty, as it could be redesigned or left untouched as it nears the end of its lifecycle.
