Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect

Balamory Makes a Comeback – Original Stars Return for New Adventures

After nearly two decades since its final episode on CBeebies, the cherished children’s series Balamory is making a triumphant return. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who brought Miss Hoolie to life, recalls the iconic catchphrase that has echoed through decades: “What’s the story in Balamory?” She says it’s a question she’s heard almost daily for 20 years, underscoring its lasting cultural impact.

The Magic of a Classic

Balamory, a vibrant fictional island community, became a staple for children through its blend of camaraderie and lighthearted problem-solving. The show’s legacy endures, with its original cast now reprising their roles for a fresh chapter. Wilson Nimmo expresses enthusiasm about the new stories, while Andrew Agnew, who portrayed PC Plum, calls it an honor to revisit a show they deeply cherish.

“It’s such an honour to be back doing something that we love so much.”

The revival aims to evoke the warmth of the early 2000s, offering a nostalgic touch for modern audiences. Wilson Nimmo highlights the rarity of children’s programs that center on peers: “Children are exposed to so much animation now, which is fantastic. But for kids to sit and watch kids on the telly, not a lot of shows do that any more.”

Amid a broader challenge for UK-made children’s content—recently flagged by the BBC as declining—Balamory’s return feels timely. The show once drew two million weekly viewers in the UK and millions globally, with its international success leading to global recognition for its cast. Wilson Nimmo shares a memory of connecting with The Wiggles during a visit to Australia, while Agnew recalls a memorable moment in Turkey: “In my trunks in a swimming pool… kids came up and said, ‘You’re PC Plum’.”

A New Chapter for the Island

The first script read-through of the revival stirred emotions, with Wilson Nimmo describing the nostalgia as “real.” The new series retains many familiar faces, including Penny Pocket and Edie McCredie, while introducing fresh characters. Agnew teases the addition of Dr Ollie (Carl Spencer), a vet, and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews), noting: “The island would not be the same without him. He’s still bumbling, still a wee bit getting the wrong end of the stick quite a lot.”

“People come up to me and sing my song at me. That’s lovely… but it doesn’t go away.”

The show’s creators have updated its music, adding new songs while preserving the essence of the original. Agnew explains: “There’s new songs as well and new takes on the songs because they’ve been revamped a wee bit to modernise them.” Despite these changes, the cast remains deeply connected to the show’s roots, with Wilson Nimmo calling the revival a “love letter to the original.”

Produced by Lion Television Scotland, the new series features 10 episodes each. The first episode airs on Monday 20th April on CBeebies, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day. As the island’s story continues, the revival promises both familiarity and fresh excitement for a new generation of viewers.
