British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again

British Teen Sky Brown Reclaims Skateboarding World Championship Title

At 17, Sky Brown, a British skateboarder, has reclaimed the world championship title, having previously won it at the age of 14. The event in São Paulo, Brazil, saw her triumph with the support of her father, Stewart Brown, a former professional skateboarder, who celebrated her victory alongside her.

Reflecting on Global Issues

“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” Brown shared, expressing her gratitude. However, she also highlighted the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, stating: ‘There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world.'”

Competition Delays and Results

The competition faced delays on Sunday due to “adverse weather conditions and recurrent rainfall.” After the finalists completed two of the four scheduled runs, organizers opted to finalize the results early, citing unsafe conditions in the venue. Brown, who held a lead of nearly four points at 88.16, was declared the winner. Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa secured silver with 84.36, while American Minna Stess claimed bronze at 83.90.

Background and Olympic Achievements

Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother, Mieko, and a British father, Stewart Brown, the athlete began her competitive journey at age eight in the US Open. She first represented Great Britain in 2018, a decision that would later define her career. At just 13, she made history as Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist, earning bronze in Tokyo 2020. Less than a year later, she added another bronze to her tally in the park event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, overcoming a shoulder injury just days prior.

Following her victory, Brown emphasized the significance of her win: “The level is crazy. I had to put a lot down to get here, but I am definitely bummed that we couldn’t fully do a final.” She noted that becoming a world champion on International Women’s Day carried special meaning.

Olympic Expansion and Legacy

Skateboarding was introduced as one of four new sports to the Olympics in 2020, featuring competitions in both “park” and “street” formats. Brown’s success continues to solidify her position as a trailblazer in the sport, currently ranked seventh globally. Her achievements underscore a remarkable trajectory, blending early talent with perseverance in high-stakes events.
