Southern California mayor resigns, will plead guilty to acting as agent for Chinese government
Southern California Mayor Faces Guilty Plea After Resigning as Chinese Government Agent
Southern California mayor resigns will plead – Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, has resigned from her position and will enter a guilty plea for serving as an unauthorized agent of the Chinese government. The decision follows her April indictment for acting as an illegal foreign government agent in the United States. Wang, 58, acknowledged the severity of her actions in a public statement, expressing regret over her “past personal mistakes” and accepting responsibility for her conduct.
Resignation and Legal Proceedings
Arcadia, a suburban city located 13 miles northeast of Los Angeles, has a population of roughly 53,000, with a substantial Chinese-American community. Wang was elected to the city council in November 2022 and assumed the role of mayor in December of that year. Her resignation comes ahead of a federal court appearance later this week, where she will formally admit guilt to the felony charge.
Investigation and Accusations
City manager Dominic Lazzaretto clarified in a press release that the investigation targets Wang’s individual actions, not city resources or staff. “The case centers on personal conduct that ended after she took office in December 2022,” he stated. The indictment alleges that Wang aligned with Chinese officials, sharing media content favorable to Beijing without prior disclosure to U.S. authorities. Her activities, spanning from late 2020 to 2022, involved promoting the People’s Republic of China’s interests through strategic communication efforts.
“We want to be clear: this investigation concerns individual conduct, and the charges are for actions that ceased after Ms. Wang was sworn into office in December 2022,” said Dominic Lazzaretto, the city’s manager.
Collaboration with Chinese Officials
Wang’s plea agreement includes her collaboration with Yaoning “Mike” Sun, a fellow defendant who pleaded guilty in October 2023. Sun, now serving a four-year sentence, acted as treasurer for Wang’s 2022 campaign. Together, they managed U.S. News Center, a platform used to disseminate content supporting the PRC’s policies. The site targeted the Chinese-American community, amplifying narratives favorable to Beijing’s stance on issues like Xinjiang.
“She recognizes the seriousness of the charge and accepts responsibility for ‘past personal mistakes,’” stated her attorneys, Jason Liang and Brian Sun. “She apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life.”
Specific Actions in June 2021
A key incident occurred in June 2021 when a Chinese official provided Wang with a link to an Los Angeles Times article written by the PRC’s consul general. The piece contested allegations of Uyghur genocide and forced labor in Xinjiang. Within minutes, Wang shared the link on her news site, U.S. News Center, thereby endorsing the article’s claims. This act of sharing was cited as evidence of her alleged alignment with Chinese government interests.
“There has never been genocide in Xinjiang or forced labor in the region’s cotton fields or any other sector,” the article claimed, as highlighted by Wang’s actions.
Political Ties and Public Reaction
Wang’s relationship with Yaoning Sun, who is also a defendant, ended in early 2024. Her attorneys referred to this as a “trust and love for apparently the wrong person who ultimately led her astray.” The case has sparked debate about the intersection of political advocacy and potential conflicts of interest, especially in a community with strong ties to China. City officials have emphasized that the charges focus on her individual conduct rather than broader city operations.
Legal Consequences and Future Implications
The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Wang’s guilty plea is expected to be made shortly, following her court appearance on Monday. The incident underscores growing scrutiny of officials who engage in activities supporting foreign governments. As the legal process unfolds, it may influence public perception of political roles in regions with significant international influence.
