Spain formally dismisses ambassador to Israel amid tensions with Tel Aviv
Decision to relieve Ana Sálomon of duties announced in official journal
The Spanish government has officially removed Ana Sálomon from her role as ambassador to Israel. The action was published in the state gazette on Tuesday, following approval by the Council of Ministers. As a result, Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will now operate without an ambassador, relying on a chargé d’affaires to manage diplomatic affairs.
Reciprocal move follows Israel’s similar action in Madrid
This decision is viewed as a symbolic exchange after Israel took comparable steps with its embassy in Madrid. In May 2024, Israel recalled its ambassador to Spain, Rodica Radian-Gordon, following Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state. The current diplomatic leadership in Madrid is held by Chargé d’Affaires Dana Erlich.
Escalating tensions linked to Gaza conflict
Spain’s ambassador was recalled in September 2023 after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared measures to halt what he called a genocide in Gaza. Israel’s response was swift, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accusing Sánchez of antisemitism and restricting entry for two of his ministers. This further deepened the already strained relationship between the nations.
“Spain’s recognition of Palestine has been a catalyst for this reciprocal action,” stated Saar, highlighting the growing friction between the two countries.
Since the departure of Radian-Gordon, Israel has yet to appoint a new ambassador to Spain. A replacement was initially considered, but the chosen candidate resigned to take a different post. Consequently, the ambassadorial position remains vacant, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic discord.
