Work begins on nuclear power station that promises 8,000 jobs
UK Launches Construction of Nuclear Power Station with 8,000 Job Promise
The UK government recently announced the commencement of construction for a new nuclear power station, which is set to generate 8,000 jobs. The site, Wylfa on Anglesey, was selected following a £2.5bn collaboration with Rolls-Royce, signed last year, to develop the facility. Rolls-Royce highlighted that the project will create 3,000 roles directly at the Wylfa location and an additional 5,000 jobs nationwide.
A New Era in Nuclear Energy
Tom Greatrex, chief executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, emphasized that the initiative represents a “historic step for clean power, industrial growth and skilled jobs in Wales.” He described Wylfa as a “very special site with unique strengths,” noting its potential to spearhead the UK’s first small modular reactors (SMRs). These reactors are constructed in a factory in modular components before being assembled on-site.
“The sector stands ready to help make the country’s first SMR fleet a success, putting Britain at the forefront of new nuclear development,” Greatrex added.
Project Timeline and Impact
The initiative remains pending a final investment decision, expected by the early 2030s. Once all planning and regulatory steps are completed, the SMRs are anticipated to become operational in the 2030s. The site, located on the Anglesey coast in north-west Wales, previously hosted a nuclear power station for 44 years, generating electricity since 1971. It was decommissioned in 2015 after its last reactor ceased operations.
Rolls-Royce’s Commitment
Chris Cholerton, Rolls-Royce SMR chief executive, stated the deal exemplifies the UK government’s “golden age of new nuclear being delivered successfully with British technology.” He also noted that the early works agreement signed last year has provided “certainty” to the UK SMR programme, allowing site work in Czechia to begin.
Energy Security Vision
Ed Miliband, the UK government’s Energy Secretary, hailed the development as a “major milestone” for the nation’s energy security. He argued that the clean energy mission is essential for reducing reliance on fossil fuels and regaining control of energy independence. “Our clean energy mission is the only route to getting off the rollercoaster of fossil fuels and take back control of our energy independence,” he said.
